Stylophora is a genus of small polyp stony (SPS) corals belonging to the family Acroporidae, which also includes corals like Acropora and Montipora. Stylophora corals are popular in the aquarium trade because of their relatively hardy nature compared to other SPS corals and their attractive, branching growth forms. These corals can add vibrant color and structure to a reef tank, with some species displaying striking hues of purple, pink, green, and orange.

Stylophora corals are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, where they typically grow on the outer reef slopes in shallow, well-lit areas. They have become a favorite for hobbyists who are looking for a more beginner-friendly SPS coral that still offers beautiful coloration and impressive growth.

Description of Stylophora Coral:

  • Appearance:

    • Growth Form: Stylophora corals typically grow in a branching or bushy form, although some species may develop a more encrusting growth pattern depending on environmental conditions. The branches are generally thicker and more robust than those of other fast-growing SPS corals like Acropora.
    • Color: Stylophora corals come in a variety of vibrant colors, including purple, pink, green, and orange. Under strong lighting, their colors become more vivid, and they can display different hues, which makes them an attractive addition to reef tanks.
    • Polyps: The polyps of Stylophora are small and extend during the day to capture plankton and nutrients. The coral’s polyps can give it a soft, fuzzy appearance, which adds to its texture and overall visual appeal.
  • Species: Several species within the Stylophora genus are available in the aquarium hobby, with Stylophora pistillata being the most commonly seen. The species can vary in growth form and coloration, but they share similar care requirements.

Care Guide for Stylophora Coral:

While Stylophora corals are generally regarded as hardier than some other SPS species, they still require specific conditions to thrive. They are a great choice for intermediate hobbyists who are familiar with the needs of SPS corals and are looking for something a bit more forgiving than Acropora or Montipora.

1. Lighting:

  • Intensity: Stylophora corals need moderate to strong lighting to thrive. They are photosynthetic and rely on the energy produced by their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. High-intensity lighting (e.g., LED, T5, or metal halide) is ideal for promoting their growth and vibrant coloration.
  • Recommended PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation): Stylophora corals typically do best with 200–400 PAR at their location in the tank.
  • Lighting Spectrum: A lighting spectrum between 14,000K and 20,000K is ideal. This spectrum provides both the blue and white light needed to encourage healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

2. Water Parameters:

Stylophora corals are relatively tolerant of slightly less-than-ideal water conditions, but they still require stable parameters for optimal growth.

  • Salinity: Maintain a salinity range of 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity (SG).
  • pH: The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4.
  • Alkalinity: Aim for alkalinity between 8–12 dKH (degrees of carbonate hardness).
  • Calcium: Keep calcium levels at 400–450 ppm to support the formation of the coral’s skeleton.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium levels should range between 1250–1350 ppm.
  • Temperature: The ideal water temperature for Stylophora is 76°F to 80°F (24°C–27°C).
  • Nitrate and Phosphate: Keep nitrate levels below 5–10 ppm and phosphate below 0.03 ppm to avoid nutrient imbalances and algae growth, which can compete with corals for light and nutrients.

3. Water Flow:

  • Stylophora corals thrive in moderate to strong water flow. They need adequate water movement to bring in nutrients and remove waste products from their polyps.
  • Random or turbulent water flow is best, mimicking natural reef conditions. However, gentler direct flow should be avoided as it may damage the delicate coral branches.
  • Good water circulation ensures that the coral receives sufficient oxygen and that waste is swept away, preventing the build-up of debris on the coral.

4. Placement in the Tank:

  • Lighting and Flow: Stylophora corals should be placed high up in the aquarium, where they can receive the strongest light and optimal water flow. They will do best in the middle to upper regions of a reef tank.
  • Space Requirements: While they are not as aggressive as some other SPS species, it’s still important to give Stylophora corals sufficient space to grow. They can compete for space with other corals, and placing them too close to other colonies may result in stinging and aggression.
  • Substrate: Stylophora corals should be placed on stable live rock or frag plugs. Secure them in place so that they are not easily dislodged by water flow.

5. Feeding:

  • Supplemental Feeding: While Stylophora corals mainly rely on photosynthesis for nutrition, they can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding. Offering phytoplankton or zooplankton a few times a week will provide extra nutrients, especially in low-nutrient tanks.
  • Amino Acids and Coral Foods: Some reef keepers also add amino acid supplements or other specialized coral foods to encourage faster growth and vibrant coloration.

6. Maintenance:

  • Water Testing: Regularly test and adjust water parameters, particularly calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium. Consistency is key to keeping Stylophora corals healthy.
  • Pruning: Stylophora corals can grow quickly, especially in mature tanks with stable conditions. Prune back any overly aggressive branches to prevent overcrowding and encourage even growth.
  • Algae Control: Keep nutrient levels low to prevent algae blooms, which can compete with Stylophora corals for light and space. A clean-up crew (e.g., snails, tangs, and hermit crabs) can help maintain a clean tank environment.

7. Common Issues & Troubleshooting:

  • Color Loss: If the coral starts to lose its vibrant color and turns brown or dull, it could be a sign of insufficient lighting, poor water quality, or a nutrient imbalance. Ensure the lighting intensity and water parameters are optimal.
  • Slow Growth: Slow growth could be due to inadequate calcium, alkalinity, or nutrient levels. Also, ensure the water flow and lighting are appropriate.
  • Pests and Diseases: Stylophora corals may occasionally suffer from pests like flatworms, red bugs, or Aiptasia. Inspect the coral regularly for signs of pest infestation or disease, and take action if necessary (e.g., manual removal, dips, or treatments).

Conclusion:

Stylophora corals are an excellent choice for intermediate reef aquarists looking for a beautiful and fast-growing SPS coral that is relatively easier to care for than more demanding species like Acropora. They can thrive in stable conditions with moderate to strong lighting, moderate water flow, and well-maintained water parameters. With proper care, Stylophora corals can grow into vibrant, branching colonies that add color and structure to your reef tank.

While they are generally more forgiving than other SPS corals, they still require attention to detail regarding water quality, light, and flow to thrive.
