Euphyllia corals, including popular species like Euphyllia divisa (Frogspawn coral), Euphyllia glabrescens (Torch coral), and Euphyllia ancora (Hammer coral), are LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals. They are relatively hardy and common in reef aquariums. Here are the general parameters and conditions to keep Euphyllia corals healthy:
Water Parameters:
1. Temperature: 24-27°C (75-81°F)
2. pH: 8.1-8.4
3. Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH (ideal range: 8-9 dKH)
4. Calcium: 400-450 ppm
5. Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
6. Nitrates: 1-10 ppm (keep it on the lower side, but some nitrates are okay)
7. Phosphates: < 0.03 ppm
8. Salinity: 1.023-1.025 (specific gravity)
Lighting:
• Moderate: Euphyllia corals do well under moderate lighting (PAR range: 50-150).
• They are photosynthetic, relying on zooxanthellae algae within their tissues, so moderate light is sufficient. However, some species, like the torch coral, can tolerate more intense lighting if properly acclimated.
Water Flow:
• Moderate: Euphyllia corals prefer gentle to moderate, indirect flow. Their polyps should sway but not be blasted by direct current. Too much flow can stress the coral, leading to tissue damage.
Placement:
• Place Euphyllia corals in areas with moderate light and flow. Ensure there’s plenty of space around them since they have sweeper tentacles that can extend several inches and sting nearby corals.
Feeding:
• While Euphyllia corals are primarily photosynthetic, they benefit from occasional supplemental feeding of small meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral-targeted foods. Feeding can encourage faster growth and health.
Stability:
• Euphyllia corals thrive in stable environments with consistent water parameters. Avoid drastic fluctuations in temperature, salinity, or water chemistry, as this can lead to stress or coral bleaching.
With proper care, Euphyllia corals are relatively easy to keep and can grow well in reef aquariums, adding beautiful motion and color.
